Basilica of St. Mary

Brothers,

An exciting day for our Parish and our Diocese.  At this mornings 0830 mass, Bishop Burbidge announced that the Vatican issued a decree granting St. Mary Catholic Church in Alexandria, the title ‘minor basilica,’ making it the first basilica in Northern Virginia, the first in the Catholic Diocese of Arlington and the 84th in the United States.

Our 223-year-old Roman Catholic Church will officially be named “The Basilica of Saint Mary.”

Merry Christmas at Christ House

Dear Brothers,

Today, after church, our AOH Crew ( McCarthys, Rileys and Kilday) dropped off food and St. Mary ornaments to  Christ House Shelter. Our Division also provided the Christmas tree to Christ House for their lobby. Sr. Annie was grateful as usual and wished you all blessings and a Merry Christmas.

Sucessful Ornaments Sales

Brother Kilday was “King of Sales”.  Pictured below is the “night” crew with flashlights.  Great work everyone selling ornaments the past few months.  We sold approximately 250 ornaments.  Some of the ornaments were given to the St. Mary Parish Office staff. The remaining ornaments were donated to the Daughters of St. Paul Religious Sisters at Pauline’s Bookstore.

AOH Capitals Hockey Game Outing

Thanks to Brother Mike McEntee for coordinating AOH Capitals outing.  We had almost 40 people in attendance (members with their family/friends) for the action packed evening starting with the buffet at the Brewhouse.  Caps won 4-3 thanks to some extra prayers from Fr. Barnes and Fr. Bresnahan!

1890’s Hibernian Photo

Brother Melley’s great-grandfather Maurice (“Morris”) Murphy in his AOH regalia (zoom in on the stash “AOH”), circa 1890.  Looks like he is ready for battle. Great family history.

☘1st Annual AOH Duck Hunt

Our first hunt was a blast. We plan on doing another hunt on Friday, January 20. Our guide Travis was a real character.
